The Kanohi Gakaui is the Mask of Water. An Gakaui Nuva is created when a destined Gakaui is exposed to Energized Protodermis.
The Kanohi Gakaui grants its user access to the power of elemental Water. The mask relies on its own elemental energy pool when using the mask's elemental abilities. There are limits to said abilities, and as such Gakaui-bearers do not have access to the full range of powers available to beings naturally-attuned to the element of Water.
The Great Kanohi Gakaui grants the user access to the elemental power of Water at Toa-level while worn. The mask does not boost any pre-existing powers or recharge the user's own elemental energy pool. It relies on its own separate and finite elemental energy pool, and the user can (with skill) use the mask simultaneously as an innate power. The mask does not grant the user any innate elemental abilities such as resistances, and does not have the ability to absorb its element. It also does not grant species-specific elemental abilites such as nova blasts.
