The Kanohi Kaukau is the Mask of Water Breathing. A Kaukau Nuva is created when a destined Kaukau is exposed to Energized Protodermis.

The Kanohi Kaukau allows the user to breathe underwater and liquid protodermis. While the mask is active, the user cannot breathe air.


The Great Kanohi Kaukau allows the user to breathe water and the water permutation of liquid protodermis. However, they lose the ability to breathe air (or other substances) while the mask is active. The mask does also not protect the user against environmental dangers of deep waters, such as cold and water pressure.

The Great mask has an increased duration compared to the Noble Kaukau.

The Noble Kanohi Kaukau allows the user to breathe water and the water permutation of liquid protodermis. However, they lose the ability to breathe air (or other substances) while the mask is active. The mask does also not protect the user against environmental dangers of deep waters, such as cold and water pressure.

The Great Kanohi Kaukau Nuva allows the user to breathe water and the water permutation of liquid protodermis. However, they lose the ability to breathe air (or other substances) while the mask is active.

The Great Nuva mask additionally protects the user against cold and intense water pressure. It also has an unlimited duration, permanently adapting the user until the mask is disabled (such as by being turned off or being removed). If sympathed onto other beings, the power can be used offensively to suffocate foes.

The Noble Kanohi Kaukau Nuva allows the user to breathe water and the water permutation of liquid protodermis. However, they lose the ability to breathe air (or other substances) while the mask is active.

The Noble Nuva mask additionally protects the user against cold and intense water pressure. It also has an increased duration compared to the Noble Kaukau, though not quite that of the Great Kaukau. If sympathed onto other beings, the power can be used offensively to suffocate foes.

Breathe Water disks make a target able breathe water or protodermic water - and only those substances.

Higher level disks have a longer duration.

Application

The Kanohi Kaukau is closely associated with Ga-Matoran due to it being the mask worn by Toa Gali in legends.

The Kanohi Kaukau is sometimes outfitted with a telescopic lens.

An official Kaukau model was made by LEGO: the standard Great. Two official Kaukau Nuva models were made by LEGO: the standard Great Nuva and swamp-adapted Great Nuva.

RSG has several unofficial Kaukau models: the standard Noble (designed by Perp3tual and crafted by HahliNuva) of which there are three additional variants - with visor, with scope, and with a scope that accepts a stud piece - Hordika (currently unavailable) (designed by Oomatu and crafted by Petrus), Modern Vanguard (designed by Perp3tual and crafted by HahliNuva) of which there is one additional variant, and Ancient Vanguard (designed by Oomatu and crafted by HahliNuva).
