Xia is a heavily-industrialized island in the Matoran Universe and the homeland of the Vortixx species.

Overview

As one of the most industrialized places in the universe, Xia even rivals modern Metru Nui in terms of technological prowess and economic significance. The most important rule on Xia is to profit, and the only real crime is to fail to do so.

History

Originally, the native Vortixx species produced all kinds of wares in their smoke-belching factories, but under the rule of Barraki Pridak, the island largely shifted its focus to designing and producing weapons and armaments for war – and stuck to its new trade, even after the League of Six Kingdoms was long gone.

Landscape

Nearly every part of Xia’s original environment has been steadily eroded by the ongoing expansion of factories, foundries, warehouses, and other industrial buildings, leaving only a thin and heavily-polluted stream of water trickling around the island. The air quality is no better, with a thick smog blotting out stars and at times even sunlight, shrouding the island in a stifling haze. Instead of wasting valuable space with homes or other dwelling places, every worker on Xia bunks near their post, minimizing travel time and increasing efficiency.

Xia’s most notable landmark – and its most dangerous – is simply known as the Mountain, a living rock famous for consuming anyone (or anything) that gets too close.

Society

The native Vortixx species lives in a strict hierarchy based on gender: males are considered naturally inferior, and must accomplish significantly more compared to their female counterparts in order to attain positions of status. While the economic ties of Xia extend far and wide, few of its inhabitants have the opportunity to venture beyond the borders of their homeland, aside from high-ranking female Vortixx on business trips.

In Xian society, Vortixx undergo a rite of passage that involves climbing the Mountain with a partner; if both reach the top and survive, they are granted various advantages and privileges, but those who return alone are given even greater honors for showing that they will stop at nothing in order to survive.

Xia’s titanic factories are heavily automated in many places, but the more complex elements of manufacturing still require a significant amount of manual labor. Although Xia is primarily populated by Vortixx, Matoran - who the Vortixx consider to be natural workers - also make up some amount of the island’s workforce.
