The Kanohi Hau is the Mask of Shielding. A Hau Nuva is created when a destined Hau is exposed to Energized Protodermis.

The Kanohi Hau creates a shield of energy around the wearer, protecting them from physical harm - however, not from ambush.


The Great Kanohi Hau generates a force field around the user, protecting them from physical harm - physical objects or substances, energy, and toxic gas. However, it does not protect against psionic attacks, ethereal attacks such as gravity manipulation, or manipulation of the environment within the shield, and breathable air is able to pass through. The shield is weightless and does not impede the user's movement. The shield is only big enough to protect the user, and cannot protect other beings - the shield will push other beings away if activated. The shield must be consciously activated, and it only protects against attacks the user anticipates, much as if it were an actual shield. The shield can be broken with sufficiently powerful attacks.

The force field of the Great mask is stronger than that of the Noble Hau. Additionally, it is able to be maintained for an increased duration.
