Overview

Known far and wide as the City of Legends, Metru Nui is in many ways the capital of the Matoran world, representing the peak of technological advancement and political authority for the Matoran species. The island is covered by a single sprawling city, its skyline dominated by the ever-present Coliseum – said to be the tallest building in the universe. Metru Nui is famous for its Matoran scientists and craftsmen, as well as the massive power plant which produces enough energy to both satisfy the city and export its surplus to nearby lands. The Great Temple of Mata Nui can also be found here, drawing Matoran from every corner of the universe to the city. Even travelers and merchants of other species frequently visit the island. For all these reasons, Metru Nui has been highly coveted by many warring factions over history. For reasons that are not well-understood, industry and activity in Metru Nui seems to be somehow intrinsically tied to the health of Mata Nui himself. Although work in the city has only rarely come to a complete halt, the effects are evident and cataclysmic as the Great Spirit’s very life force begins to fade. These crises require extraordinary measures to resolve, and so several organizations keep a watchful eye on the city’s populace to ensure that they are not disturbed.

History

According to legend – and disputed by some experts – in the earliest days, the island was comparatively lush and open, with only the foundations of the Coliseum towering above the forests and deserts, but this was soon covered by urban sprawl. A brutal civil war early in the city’s history threatened to tear the island apart, but actions by Makuta Teridax set Metru Nui back on the Great Spirit’s path. Since then, the island has existed in a state of relative harmony, allowing for its unparalleled advancement compared to other regions of the universe.

Landscape

The city is divided into six sections, one aligned with each of the six primary Elements. Each has its own distinct atmosphere and culture, and is largely populated by Matoran of that element. However, despite their differences, each section works together as part of a larger whole to keep the city functioning on a day-to-day basis.

• Ta-Metru, associated with the Element of Fire; home to the city's forges, producing tools, armor, Kanohi, and more
• Ga-Metru, associated with the Element of Water; the spiritual center of the city, as well as the primary location of its schools and laboratories
• Po-Metru, associated with the Element of Stone; the city's manufacturing and assembly center for large-scale goods, as well as statues and other works of art
• Ko-Metru, associated with the Element of Ice; where the city's foremost scholars work to predict the future using the patterns of the stars
• Le-Metru, associated with the Element of Air; the nexus of the city's transportation system and vehicle development
• Onu-Metru, associated with the Element of Earth; the site of mining operations and the great Archives that record the past of both the city and other parts of the universe
