In myths, Karzahni is described as a dire place where [[Matoran]] who worked poorly were sent to labor in darkness, never to return. These stories were rooted in fact, as Matoran who – whether due to a lack of enthusiasm for their tasks or sustaining significant injuries – were unable to complete their duties were indeed sent to Karzahni for repairs and further education. They were then to be sent back to their homelands, restored in body and mind, and ready to work once more. Although this may have been the case in the early history of the universe, at some point it was realized that individuals who had been sent to Karzahni stopped returning, and those rare few who traveled there by choice mysteriously disappeared. In reality, unable to properly repair the Matoran who were sent to him, Karzahni first hid his failures elsewhere in the universe, and eventually resorted to imprisoning them in his realm. As a result, Matoran are no longer sent there, and the island’s very name has taken on the nature of a curse.

Overview

In myths, Karzahni is described as a dire place where Matoran who worked poorly were sent to labor in darkness, never to return.

History

The island was claimed by the warlord Pridak during the reign of the League of Six Kingdoms, but even he was unable to enforce this claim due to its inhospitable nature.

Since no one sent there for repair has returned for thousands of years, the island of Karzahni was eventually forgotten, with any travelers coming across it by chance either becoming inmates or being driven away by the Manas. In Matoran myth, however, it lives on as a place where slothful and undutiful Matoran were sent.

Landscape

Karzahni itself is a barren wasteland, populated largely by scores of Manas crabs and the unlucky Matoran who once were sent here for repair. It is a desolate place, ruled by the eponymous and insane being after whom the island is named, and resembles a prison colony more than anything else. Its environment works in strange and unnatural ways – the rocks teem with “waterfalls” made of dust, the ground wails aloud when walked upon, ice is searing hot to the touch, and anyone who stays still for too long will find their bodies gradually turning to solid stone, among other horrors. To make matters worse, a barrier stands at its primary entrances that prevents any being of the element of Light from passing through.

While the island may appear to be directly south of Metru Nui on some ancient maps, it in fact lies above the tunnels connecting the City of Legends to the Great Dome.

Society

Karzahni rules his island with an iron fist, having broken the spirits of the vast majority of his victims.
