Formerly a peaceful race, the Skakdi were tampered with by a Makuta, causing them to turn incredibly violent and warlike, their spines lined with spikes and their eyes glowing red. As a result of the change, they also gained various abilities (for example, eyebeams with powers such as heat vision) and - when working in conjunction with another Skakdi - elemental powers that match their elemental affiliation. The physiology of Skakdi is different from that of the Matoran; each has a prominent mouth with large teeth as well as an organic spine running down their back. Although they are technically capable of wearing Kanohi, Skakdi have no physical need to do so, and cannot use mask powers. Skakdi females are typically stronger and more vicious than their male counterparts. Gender does not dictate their Elemental affinity as often as it does the Matoran species. Unlike many other species, they oftentimes choose to chew and ingest food directly as opposed to absorbing energy from it - an act viewed as repulsive by most other beings. Because of their particularly bellicose nature, Skakdi are shunned and distrusted by much of "civilized" society; for their part, the Skakdi tend to view the Matoran as weak and foolish at best. Travel to and from their native island of Zakaz is forbidden due to the damage they are able to cause, and so seeing one anywhere else in the world will immediately cause suspicion.
