The BIONICLE universe is populated by a multitude of species.

Overview

Almost all of the species that live in the Matoran Universe are biomechanical - as a baseline, each individual is approximately 85 percent mechanical and 15 percent organic. Accordingly, the time scale that the Matoran Universe operates on is very different from our own - lifespans are significantly longer, and years, decades, or even centuries are considered to be somewhat short periods of time compared to the scale of their recorded history. The species of the Matoran Universe do not reproduce conventionally, but rather are built using incredibly complex machinery that is said to operate only at the will of Mata Nui and is as old as the bones of the world itself. The general term for most intelligent species as a whole is Oropi (translated, “word-beings”), while wildlife are called Rahi (translated, “not us”). Many species have powers or abilities, and a few are even innately connected to one of the sixteen elements of the Matoran Universe.
