The Matoran are by far the most common species within the Matoran universe. They can be of any elemental affiliation (denoted by the color of their armor and mask), and are generally curious, inventive, and hardworking creatures. Matoran pursue a multitude of different trades and professions, but most importantly, many of their day-to-day duties are critical to sustaining the life of the Great Spirit. Most Matoran, as well as Toa and Turaga, typically hold three particular ideals in high regard: Unity, Duty, and Destiny, also referred to as the Three Virtues. They consider these values as having been given to them by Mata Nui himself so that they may live by them. Matoran are of lesser strength and physical stature (standing just over four feet tall) than many other species; as such, Matoran villages and cities are often led by a Turaga and protected by the stronger and more powerful Toa, although independent groups of Matoran are not entirely unheard of. Most Matoran usually look up to and respect Toa for their strength and nobility. In the absence of a Toa, Matoran tend to form their own militias in order to defend themselves. All Matoran have an elemental affiliation (complete with associated resistances) and wear Kanohi, as without them they eventually fall into a coma, but are unable to use mask or elemental powers. In larger groups, Matoran tend to divide themselves by their elemental affiliation, partially to be among like-minded beings or those who do similar work to their own. Their general appearances are typically based on the culture they live in.
Matoran are at their best when their lives are balanced between hard work and hard play. Their professions are normally determined by their elemental affinity. For example, the most common employment of a Po-Matoran would be a Carver or Builder. Whenever they are not at work, many Matoran like to participate in organized sports, such as the Disk-Throwing sport known as Akilini.
