The Turaga are the elders of Matoran society, often found in leadership or advisory roles. Most Turaga were formerly Toa who achieved their destinies and decided to give up their powers for one reason or another, making them a further offshoot of the Matoran race. Slightly stronger and faster than most Matoran (at around four and a half feet tall), Turaga still hold some reduced elemental abilities and can use the powers of Noble Kanohi masks; each also carries a Badge of Office, a tool that represents their status as Turaga (sometimes a transformed version of their Toa tool, but not always), and through which they can channel their limited elemental powers. They are usually treated with reverence by the Matoran, and most Toa will at least defer to their greater knowledge and experience, even if their wisdom may seem unconventional. Turaga tend to stay in one place after transforming. Much like the title of Toa, "Turaga" is also a title, and has in rare occasions been bestowed upon non-Turaga as a sign of leadership. If a Turaga's mask is removed, they will suffer severe weakness.
