Protocairns are Matoran transformed by Energized Protodermis into bizarre, extremely destructive creatures.

History

According to legend, Protocairns were once Matoran from an island who exposed themselves to Energized Protodermis in order to become more powerful. However, this was a gamble, and they were instead turned into destructive, amphibious beasts who began to rampage through the Matoran Universe.[1]

Less than 15,000 years ago, Protocairns attacked Metru Nui and destroyed part of Ga-Metru. Upon their deaths, they became the land that the Great Temple was built on.[2]

Over 7,000 years ago, a Protocairn invasion was dealt with by the Toa team of Norik and Varian, who also dealt with the following Parakrekks.[3]

After the Great Spirit Robot was critically damaged in the Battle of Bara Magna, the surviving Protocairns left the Matoran Universe and immigrated to Spherus Magna.[4]

Abilities and Traits

Protocairns, while bestial in manner, retain sapience and individual personalities. Their Rhotuka spinners can temporarily block the signals between the mind and the body in a target, causing an opponent to collapse.[5]

Social Structure and Interactions

Every now and then, Protocairns appear on island shores and cause immense destruction, even destroying the shore itself in some cases. Protocairns die soon after this, and their bodies fuse into a landmass.[1] Unwittingly, they help undo their damage by creating more land, which is then built upon.[6] While they live, they are extremely difficult to stop, although the Vahki on Metru Nui have had success at driving them off.[1]

Parakrekks follow after Protocairns, as they feed off the rubble that the Protocairns create.[7]
