In the Doronai Nui, several species are available to play.
Characteristics
Each species get some special characteristics:
- Size: size affects several other values, as per the following chart.

- Racial Health Band: Each species get a base, a floor and a climb for its Racial Health Band
- Elemental Pool: Each species able to wield Elemental Powers get a base, a floor, and a climb for its Elemental Pool.
- Ability Score Bonus: Each species get rules how its Ability Scores increase.
- Skill Points: Each species get rules about how much skill points are gained by level, and how they can be spent.
- Kanohi: Some species can use Kanohi. Some can use both Noble and Great masks, other only Noble. Several species also requires to bear a Kanohi mask, even if they can't use it.
- Racial Heavy Armor: A bonus or malus to the number of Heavy armor pieces the character can use.
- Armor Slots: How many armor pieces the character can use.
- Starting equipment: What armor, weapons, and currency the character start with.
- Proficiencies: Each species gain proficiency in one or several skills. Some species also get proficiencies for weapons.
- Several special abilities modifying rolls made in some situations.

Templates
A Template is a set of modifiers that may be applied to a character, often by narrative forces controlled by the Game Master.
If an ability listed under a template doesn't exist under the original species, it is added to the character. If it exists, it change or replace the original ability.

Transformations
It is possible to change from one species to another; this process is only available between some species.
