Katanok are insectoid machines that live in and maintain the Great Spirit Robot's superstructure.

The Katanok serve as an internal repair system for the Great Spirit Robot, tending to its structure and internal regulation systems.

The nature of the Katanok and their work ensures that they are very rarely, if ever, glimpsed by the Oropi inhabitants of the Matoran Universe. In the event that an unauthorized being should breach the boundaries of the Great Spirit Robot's superstructure, the Katanok will respond with force to remove or destroy what they consider to be a "faulty" unit operating beyond its assigned parameters. A few beings who have seen them and lived to tell the tale claim that the Katanok's faces have been stolen by the Great Spirit, lest they see the true nature of the universe and speak of it to others.

Katanok have no will or identity of their own, single-mindedly carrying out pre-programmed directives.
