Tunnelers are lizard-like Rahi who absorb powers used against them.

History

The Tunneler species was created by the Makuta using Viruses and Liquid Protodermis to be one of the Rahi to inhabit the Matoran Universe.[1]

A population of Tunnelers lived in Po-Metru in Metru Nui.

About 1,001 years ago, a maddened Tunneler emerged in the Sculpture Fields. Toa Metru Vakama and Onewa defeated it by combining their Elemental Powers to form glass. The Tunneler accidentally became a creature of glass, and began to fragment under its own weight. It thus ceased moving until the Vahki arrived to apprehend it.[2]

Some Tunnelers periodically appeared in Po-Wahi on Mata Nui.[3]

After the Great Spirit Robot was critically damaged in the Battle of Bara Magna, the surviving Tunnelers left the Matoran Universe and immigrated to Spherus Magna.[4]

Abilities and Traits

Tunnelers are about twice the length of a Matoran. They eat solid Protodermis and have been known to burrow into warehouses, where they consume both raw Protodermis and finished tools. Although they don't usually pose a real threat to Matoran, occasionally one will give in to a "madness" and rampage through Matoran work areas. Signs of this condition include red eyes and mottled scales.

Tunnelers' primary defense is their ability to take on the form of any force directed at them. For example, when fire is blasted at a Tunneler, it becomes a creature comprised of fire. This can make them very dangerous, but can also be exploited as a means of defeating them.[2]

Trivia

  • Tunnelers cannot take on the form of Energized Protodermis, as they would be transformed or destroyed first (depending on the individual Tunneler's destiny).[5]
