== History ==
The [[Great Beings]] created the Zone of Nightmares as one of the challenges presented to prospective thieves of the [[Kanohi]] [[Ignika]]. Any being who traveled through this area had to face what they feared the most.

When [[Vezon]] journeyed to claim the Mask of Life, he was exempted from being exposed to the Zone, for the Kanohi desired him to be its protector. When the rest of the [[Piraka]] reached the Zone of Nightmares, they faced [[Irnakk]], the worst fear of all [[Skakdi]], who used his [[Zamor]] Spheres to subject them to their worst nightmares and absorbed [[Zaktan]] into his mind. However, Zaktan managed to defeat the creature in a battle of wills, and the group continued down the 777 Stairs.

When the [[Toa Inika]] reached the Zone of Nightmares, they saw a ghost of [[Toa Mangai]] [[Lhikan]] that said they should turn back and that there was no hope for the Great Spirit {{p|Mata Nui|Being}}. Upon questioning, he admitted he would not abandon such a quest and vanished soon after. Pressing on, the Toa received a vision of a [[Tahnok]], [[Tahnok-Kal]], a [[Nui-Rama]], a [[Muaka]], a [[Rahkshi]] [[Turahk]], and [[Makuta]] [[Teridax]]. Each Toa lost control of their powers and killed their foes, only to watch the enemies revealed as the [[Toa Nuva]]. They were torn with shock and the fear that they might accidentally harm Mata Nui as they did the Toa Nuva, but then Kongu's Kanohi [[Suletu]] telepathically exposed the absence of minds in the dead Toa Nuva. The bodies disappeared, revealing that it was simply an illusion of fear. The Toa Inika then proceeded down the stairs.

When [[Teridax]] was killed in the [[Battle of Bara Magna]], the Zone of Nightmares was severely damaged, and the Matoran evacuated to [[Spherus Magna]].
