Stone Rats were known to live in [[Skakdi]] fortresses on [[Zakaz]]{{OnlineCitation|DW|3}} and under [[Metru Nui]], especially the poorly-maintained portions of the [[Archives]].

A swarm of stone rats once plagued [[Ta-Metru]], driven from their nest by an attacking [[Nui-Rama]].{{BookCitation|BA6|chapternumber=7|page=97}}

About 1,001 years ago, after the defeat of the [[Morbuzakh]], the [[Toa Metru]] encountered a swarm of Stone Rats in the [[Fikou Web]]. While the Toa Metru crossed a chasm traversed by a cable, the swarm of Stone Rats rose from below and began to gnaw upon the cable. To rescue the others, [[Toa]] [[Vakama]] weakened the fraying cable with a [[Kanoka]] disk, causing both himself and the Stone Rats to plummet to the ground. Following the [[Great Cataclysm]], a large number of Stone Rats migrated to the island of {{p|Mata Nui|Location}}, along with the [[Matoran]]. The creatures began to make their homes in caves and other similar areas, where they lived for 1,000 years. Stone Rats have extremely sharp teeth that can shred even through solid rock. Voracious creatures, Stone Rats will eat any obstacle between them and their food, regardless of the material.
