== History ==
According to legend, Protocairns were once Matoran from an island who exposed themselves to Energized Protodermis in order to become more powerful. However, this was a gamble, and they were instead turned into destructive, amphibious beasts who began to rampage through the [[Matoran Universe]].{{ComicCitation|C23|8}}

Less than 15,000 years ago, Protocairns attacked [[Metru Nui]] and destroyed part of [[Ga-Metru]]. Upon their deaths, they became the land that the [[Great Temple]] was built on.{{BookCitation|BA10|startpage=84|endpage=85|chapternumber=7}}

Over 7,000 years ago, a Protocairn invasion was dealt with by the Toa team of [[Norik]] and [[Varian]], who also dealt with the following [[Parakrekks]].{{OnlineCitation|NOGLB}}

== Social Structure and Interactions ==
Every now and then, Protocairns appear on island shores and cause immense destruction, even destroying the shore itself in some cases.
