			No other beings in the [[Matoran Universe]] are as sinister or corrupt as the Makuta. Being creatures of Shadow, they contain very little inner light, and are feared universally by other species. They are arrogant and prideful, but only do their work to avoid judgement by their leader, [[Miserix]]. While their original purpose was to fill the Matoran Universe with flora and fauna, rumors have spread since the end of the [[Matoran Civil War]] that their motives have taken a darker turn. Each Makuta oversees a particular region of the universe. All Makuta wear [[Kanohi]], typically ones considered immoral by others. Aside from being able to control and manipulate [[Shadow]], they can absorb objects and other beings into their bodies using a [[Shadow Hand]] (killing the target and integrating their mass into their own form if successful), infect Kanohi (bringing the wearer under their control), they have the forty-two [[Rahkshi]] powers, including shapeshifting, mind-reading (and high resistance to having their minds read by others), illusions, teleportation, resistance to both heat and cold, quick healing, and they have knowledge of how to manipulate the very environment itself. Makuta are also able to create and control [[Kraata]] and, by extension, Rahkshi.

			A little-known fact about their physiology is that their bodies are actually composed of a gaseous substance known as [[Antidermis]]; their thick [[Protosteel]] armor acts as a sealed container, animated by their Antidermis. Because of this, they do not need to breathe, rest, eat, or drink, and do not become physically tired - but these advantages come with a price. In the highly unlikely event that their Kanohi is removed or their armor is breached, their Antidermis will begin to leak out and, after a long period of time, will eventually dissipate, killing the Makuta in question. To avoid this, they can alternatively inhabit containers and “empty shells” such as robots or living, soulless beings, although the range of powers that they have access to in these forms is more limited than usual. Player characters should not know this information unless they have an extremely compelling reason to do so, as the Makuta are incredibly secretive in many matters - especially this one.

			Makuta should rarely be encountered outside of their lairs, and if they are, they are often guarded by a team of [[Toa Hagah]]. They have a dominating presence due to their size and nature, and any attempt to interact with a Makuta should be met with hostility. Should the players be foolish enough to attack the Makuta, their odds of surviving are slim.
