The Lava Eel species was created by the [[Makuta]] using [[Virus]]es and [[Protodermis#Liquid Protodermis|Liquid Protodermis]] to be one of the Rahi to inhabit the [[Matoran Universe]].{{BookCitation|MGttU|63|entryname=The Makuta}}

On [[Metru Nui]], [[Ta-Matoran]] sometimes found young Lava Eels near the forges and kept them as pets at home. When the eels eventually became too big and destructive, the [[Matoran]] were forced to abandon them.{{BookCitation|BA3|96}} Lava Eels were known to frequent Ta-Metru's furnaces, [[Protodermis Reclamation Yard|Reclamation Yards]], and even the [[Archives]].{{BookCitation|MN-CoL}}

During the [[Great Rescue]], [[Toa Hordika]] [[Vakama]] found a piece of the [[Makoki Stone]] at the end of a metal beam in a furnace infested with Lava Eels. As he retrieved the stone, a Lava Eel melted through the beam and caused him to plummet to danger, until he was saved by [[Onewa]].{{MediaCitation|TSftMoL|1}}

Some Lava Eels also lived in [[Mount Valmai]],{{GregCitation|OGDi|page=183|post=7284}} in the [[Voya Nui]] region of the [[Southern Continent]].
