Prior to the [[Great Cataclysm]], Kaj lived and worked in [[Onu-Metru]]. He was captured by the [[Vahki]] under the command of [[Makuta]] [[Teridax]], disguised as [[Turaga]] [[Dume]]. He was then forced into a [[Matoran Sphere]] but was later [[Great Rescue|rescued]] by the [[Toa Metru]] and awakened on the shores of [[Naho Bay]] on the island of {{p|Mata Nui|Location}}.{{BookCitation|BA4}}

Kaj's size and strength were diminished and he also lost memories of Metru Nui, both resulting from his confinement in a Matoran Sphere. Shortly after arriving on Mata Nui, under Turaga [[Whenua]]'s direction, he worked to aid the construction of [[Onu-Koro]] by reusing parts of the [[Airship]]s that had been used to transport the Matoran to Mata Nui.{{BookCitation|BW}}

On Mata Nui, Kaj became a [[Matoran Occupations#Mata Nui Occupations|Guard]] of the gate to Onu-Koro. He was assigned to protect the [[Cavern of Light]], and at one point had to evacuate the area after burst pipes flooded the area with lava.
